And diagnosed or misdiagnosed a patient who was seen by Arthur
Daniel Hayes, the man accused of practicing medicine without a
license, is speaking out tonight.
Screen right side female anchor:
That’s right, Newschannel 5’s Becky Medellin has been following this
story, she joins us live with all the details. Becky.
Becky Medellin:
We tracked her down and the woman talked to us about her experience
with Hayes.
Today Elizabeth Quiroz appears to be a healthy 20 year old, but a
few years ago she underwent an ultrasound and was diagnosed with a
cysts on her ovary. She took her doctor’s word for it and took the
pills he gave her to treat the cyst.
Quiroz:
Nothing was ever suspicious. I mean they were . . . I mean. . .
well nowadays I mean you just see them in there, you’d figure well
he’s a doctor.
Medellin (cuts off):
But it turns out her doctor was this man, Arthur Daniel Hayes.
Authorities say he’s not a certified physician. They’ve charged him
with practicing medicine without a license.
Quiroz:
It did put me in doubt -
Medellin’s voice cuts off while Quiroz is saying something
(inaudible):
Medellin:
When Elizabeth went to another doctor about a year an half later the
new physician couldn’t find a cyst. Was she misdiagnosed? Quiroz
can’t be sure.
Quiroz:
The doctor is life “maybe it was a minor one, maybe it went away
with the medication.” And then when I was talking to one of the
investigators, well the attorney, she told me well maybe you never
had one, you know, she’s like, then maybe he was treating you for
something you might have, you know, something you never had.
Medellin:
Quiroz tells us she’s just glad to be healthy.
Quiroz:
I mean I turned out okay and he didn’t do anything wrong, I mean,
well to me he didn’t. I don’t know what’s the situation with
anybody else but to me I really have nothing bad to say about him.
Medellin:
But she hopes other patients will come forward if they feel like
they weren’t treated properly.
Quiroz quit seeing Hayes when he shut down his clinic. Authorities
say they’ve interviewed 3 other patients also seen by Hayes. Hayes’
attorney says his client is a graduate of nuclear medicine and has
performed procedures like pelvic sonograms and x-rays many times.
The attorney adds Hayes had supervision from a medical director and
that made the procedures legal. Live from the news channel room,
Becky Medellin, live at 6.
